Paragraphs and Citations Reminders

Hey you all!

I just wanted to offer reminders and suggestions for your two paragraphs with citations that are due tomorrow. I hope you will find this review helpful as you finish up your assignment.

1. We are looking for depth of research, which means specifics from a variety of sources.

2. Make sure you use in-text citations. This may be done by referencing the title or author of the source by either: incorporating the source into your sentence, or by using a parenthetical citation.  If you want to use a parenthetical citation for an online article with no author, then just use the first main word of the longer title. Make sure you punctuate it to signify it is an article.  If I were citing the article you read last semester in Mrs. Roberge's class called "A Village Possessed" I would just have ("Village") as the citation.

3.  Include a works cited page. We assume by now you have consulted many sources. For online articles the basic citation is:

Last Name, First Name. "Title of Article."  Name of Website. Publishing Company, Day Month
      Year. Web. Date Accessed. URL

NOTE: If there is no author, just skip this.

4.  Remember to make sure you have indented works cited entries correctly, and alphabetized them.

5.  Proofread and polish your work for basic grammar, usage, and mechanics.

I have excerpted a sample from my thesis paper below about witchcraft here and included a works cited. They are all book citations, but at list it gives you the gist of how you can cite sources in the text and what we are looking for in this assignment.

                                                              Women as Witches

As part of the Inquisition, the witch would find herself not only existing, but being eradicated. Anne Llewllyn Barstow indicates before 1500 there was an estimated 705 accused witches in Europe, while in the area now known as Germany alone there were 4,208 after 1500 (179).  Both before and after 1500 however, the majority of the accused were women; 71% and 82% respectively (Barstow 179). Given the authorization of the existence of witches by the Church, it is not surprising that Barstow reports a total of 6,208 accusations after 1500, and again, the majority women. As instructed by the infamous “Witch’s Hammer”, if she were found guilty of multiple qualities of the witch, woman would undoubtedly suffer- usually with death as her punishment. So few would dare question the Church, and self-regulation resulted. “...the aim of which is to compel the body to signify one historical idea rather than the other,” explains Judith Butler of self-regulation (256). What historical idea was in need of change? Why the change in church doctrine?  For the patriarchal structure of the Church to succeed, the opposite, matriarchal structures had to become inessential.
Many researchers, such as historian Anne Llewllyn Barstow and folklorist Gilbert Cross, argue that the large number of female witches was part of the Catholic crusade against pagan customs. Barbara Ehrenreich author of Witches, Midwives and Nurses, shows that most pre-Christian practices were led by female priestesses, often associated with nature, fertility, and healing. Furthermore, the term witch is said to come from the term wicce/wicca, the Old English meaning “to know”.  Etymology also suggests wicce/wicca is the pagan term for willow, where the primitive form of aspirin originates (Cross). Involved in midwiving and healing according to both Cross and Ehrenreich, it is women who would have dispensed remedies, and who would in turn be charged as witches. Thus a woman’s day-to-day duties made her more susceptible to witchcraft accusations.

Utopia/Dystopia -Olivia M.

Utopia
Hello! I would be glad to answer a few questions. What is a lock and why would you need one? I trust the woman who just moved to town not to take my belongings or steal my identity. I have no secrets, nothing to hide, so all are welcome into my home. I trust the man walking towards me at night not to threaten me with this so called ‘gun’. If he needs money I would gladly help him, even though we are strangers. All he needs is to ask. Besides, why would anyone own this weapon? Aren’t we all friends? I don’t understand why someone would wish to inflict pain on another living being. What do you mean by race? We are all people, I don’t see the difference between you and me. Why would another religion intimidate me? Why would someone starve to death? There is enough food to go around and more! Lie? For what reason? Of course I can read, can’t everyone? Oh that’s it? Well, I’m happy to have been of service, have a nice day!

Dystopia
If I answer… what do I get? Fine, fine, just be quiet and give me the money without drawing attention to us. Locks don’t help much. You can pick a lock, break a door, or just climb in through the window. People are creative when they want something. What do I want? I guess I never really thought about it. For me, it has always been about what do I need. If I had to choose something… maybe safety? That would be nice. Hungry? Story of my life. Guns? What about them? Am I scared of them? Not really. I mean, yeah, I don’t wanna be shot but everyone dies eventually. Heck, it might be better to be dead at this point. The dead don’t have to worry about any of this crap. What crap you ask? Ha! You make me laugh. Have you looked around? Stealing is my job. Lying is an artform you have to master to survive. The government honestly does not care what happens as long as the rich have their food and pretty toys. An education is a luxury few have. And religion? Of course there are some who have one, but most would agree with me when I say if there ever was a god, he must be dead. Are we done yet? Be careful out there and don’t tell anyone I did this. I will find out if you did.

Heaven and Hell

Imagine darkness;
Colors of any hue are wiped away with tears.
The world is a stingy, swarthy Satan cell.

Constant noise echoes.
You wake screaming;
Fall asleep weeping.

Purpose is abstinent.
Lives grow stagnant without a mission.
Endless war wages on

It's hard to
               hit
                    rock
bottom,                        when you're already in hell.

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, lived a spoiled girl named Claire. Every morning, Claire woke up to the birds chirping on her terrace. There were no alarms in this fairyland, only the sweet smells of hot chocolate and cookie dough to start her day. Whee young Claire would complete her online schooling from her lovely abode within hours, and spend the rest of her day enjoying leisure activities. In her society, many people willingly attended a form of schooling, which gave them a great purpose in life. They later pursued careers of their choice to ensure the eternity of their utopia. There were limited people around, which left Claire with much needed peace and quiet. Most people were granted as much living space as they desired, because their mythical world was blessed with endless land and resources. Peace, youth, love, harmony, fuzzy socks, and pretty guitars are among some of the greatly valued aspects of this community. Claire finds her world so perfect, she refers to it as heaven on earth.

Madi McLaud Perfect vs Disappointment

Hearing music in the streets
Hitting the perfect harmony
Dancing to destinations
Doing what you please
Mind at free range of thought
Millions of happy people
Trees healthier than ever
Tea with coffee for all
Peace all over with everyone
Pride in your eyes for life
Over the seas feels like home
One day at a time stress free
Sunshine over powers the streets
Someday it'll be worth telling
Soaring through the blue horizon
All the time spent laughing
Around the corner brightness awaits
Kindly showing up those of doubt
Killing has died down in peace
No one in the way of happiness
Neither war or conflict gets bad
Building a nation of pride
Believing in success
Loving life here on earth
Living the dream

Screaming and yelling
Darkness fills the streets
No sign of life
Shots blowing off
Those fighting has no remorse
Kids abandoned while parents fight
Coffee turns to beer
Everyone is the same
It's going insane
Walls crumbling
Mental minds over thinking
Cowards with guns
Dead nights
Safety is gone
Eyes always peeled
Can't seem to live
Those who will harm win
Natural selection played wrong
Innocent destroyed
Running off of fear
Almost drowning in doubt
Screaming loss
Yelling fades
As we all crumble

Cristian Balan Heaven & Hell

My idea of a utopian society would be quite a simple one. First there would be no more hate against one another so no more wars and people would stop dying. Racism, sexism, and nationalism everywhere wouldn’t be a problem since everyone would get along, so very little negativity or crime would occur throughout the world. Then, with all the free time we achieved from creating world peace, we could focus on ending world hunger, finding cures to cancer, diseases, infections, etc. and eventually continuing forth into colonizing space. People down on Earth now get to do whatever, perform their favorite jobs to contribute to society, even though everything would be free and in such an abundance that money would have no value. Everyone would have a happy healthy lifestyle living in their dream house. And everyday when they go outside to enjoy the world and discover the infinite amount of pleasure and knowledge , people will have shoes that fit just right and they all love their neighbors. Therefor life would be a climax of euphoria forever and ever til’ the end of time, and what lies in the next life, if anything, would still be a mystery to us all.
Now my idea of a dystopian society is pretty horrible. In a world after a nuclear war, everyday you wake up with a fever and have fight off the wilderness that has wandered into your home since you live in a burned down building, with your bare fists. you then sit down to eat breakfast consisting of whatever you killed a few minutes ago and contaminated water from the irradiated pipes. After that you wear the one outfit you have because you are broke, then you have to walk uphill, in the cold, cloudy weather, starting at 4 o'clock in the morning, to your sixteen hour job of being a slave, which means literally doing whatever they request, to a government run by criminals that can watch your every move, 1984 style, who plan to resurrect every infamous rulers for their disgusting pleasure. and while this is all happening, a man repeatedly smacks you with a spoon all day and you can’t do anything about because harming the spoon smacker is punishable by death. Now if you manage to survive another day in the terrible life of this world. you go home and find out someone you knew died and when you read the newspaper it’s filled with depressing stories and propaganda, then you have to find something to eat for dinner and go to bed quickly for the next day.

It’s a Perfect Day By: Ben Griffith
A day in a faultless life starts before sunrise in order to live the day to it’s the fullest,
I’d wake up not in the suburbia of Livonia,
but in somewhere removed from the hustle and bustle.
I imagine going for a morning run with some of my Cross Country teammates,
greeting and being greeted by people driving by,
real friendship and compassion in the air.
Mid-morning I’d go to brunch in a cozy diner,
reuniting with some of my lost friends of the past,
we catch up and talk like nothing had happened, like no time has passed.
In this utopia of mine time moves slower, I’m able to savor each moment,
until I’m ready to move forward once again.
Around noon I appear at a new-unexplored park with many miles of trails,
each lap I’d complete would bring another special person to me,
another special collection of moments to be shared.
At three o’clock I’d next meet up with in a nature Orchestra Concert Shell,
and spend time with my lovable-nerdy-band friends,
we’d make music without a care in the world,
even through our mistakes and mishaps we’d appreciate and cherish our time together.
Next dinner would take me to sample all my favorite foods,
with a bottomless stomach I would savor every bite.
Of course not without company though, in a thanksgiving style table I would share in
a comrade filled dinner and all my friend groups would get along harmoniously.
Pure joy to me would be seeing the people I love living in the moment, living for today.
Later with a bonfire crackling in the background,
I sit in the silence of the wilderness reflecting on my wonderful day,
soaking up the last moments I have before I start the next perfect day to come.

Hell is a Relative Paradise By: Ben Griffith
The other day I was watching this TV show called Forensic Files and it was based on true life crime events. In Texas City, Texas a man was convicted of six counts of sexual assault back in 2007. I have seen and heard many stories like this on TV but what stuck with me was the fact that the man who was convicted only committed his crimes with a witness in attendance during the attack. The women he assaulted every time had a boyfriend or husband present, he would take his gun and threaten the life of the men while assaulting the women. To me this is the worst thing you could ever experience. The men in this situation sat helplessly as the women the loved were violated and couldn’t do anything about it. A dystopian society in my eyes would be a place where I had to watch people I love suffer. It may not be in the same way this real life story happened but this is how my worst nightmare would transpire. The people I love, one by one by one, getting tortured, sexually assaulted and murdered, while I stand at the sideline helpless, tied down, with no way to escape the mental angst being brought on. No option to sleep through anything, no passing out, no possibility of suicide to terminate the never ending terror. Tearing apart my brain to for eternity similar to the idea of burning in Hell, but the difference here is that, this is a never ending life. Hell would seem like paradise after experiencing this.
